NULS Senior School leads the County offering an unmatched education
Newcastle under Lyme School has been ranked as a Times Top 50 School. We offer an education rated as ‘Double Excellent’ by ISI, and that places us amongst the top Co-educational Independent Day Schools in the West Midlands. Our excellence in teaching, pastoral care and our outstanding facilities make us the first choice for parents across the area.
Every parent wants the best for their children and we aim to be the best School for all of our pupils so that parents can feel confident they have made the right choice. Our Senior school leads in our county and is one of the very best in the country. A Newcastle-under-Lyme School pupil’s day is a busy and productive one. Nowhere is this more true than in the rich co-curricular life of the school.
Our co-curricular provision has been recognised as a ‘significant strength’ by ISI, and pupils benefit from a wide range of opportunities to develop themselves as young outward facing people, who are responsible and possess the skills necessary to be successful in our modern world. We aim to deliver a leading co-curricular provision in Sport, Music and the Performing and Creative Arts. Many of these experiences our pupils have outside the classroom complement the ones they have as part of our rich curriculum.
From their first day, pupils are introduced to a programme of Clubs, Drama, House Activities, Music and a wide-ranging Sports programme run by our dedicated teaching staff throughout the school week and beyond. In Year 8, pupils have the opportunity to join our Combined Cadet Force (CCF), and in Year 10, they can embark on the first stage of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme with the Bronze Award.
Our staff devote thousands of hours each year, within and beyond the school week, to activities that will enhance the life skills of our pupils to guide them in becoming good all-rounders.
Subject teachers strive for continued learning beyond the academic timetable by organising a multitude of overseas trips, activity day visits, subject challenges and enrichment clubs throughout the year. We focus on the development of the whole pupil as we believe a well-rounded education equips pupils with the tools they will need for life beyond NULS.
A core value of the school is the altruistic spirit, which was apparent at its very birth in 1602. This spirit lives on in the charity and the wider sense of giving that our school and students support each year. Events run throughout the school year to raise funds for local organisations to continue their extremely valuable work.
Academic
Our inspirational teaching, superb educational facilities, and purposeful learning encourage real academic achievement for pupils at our School. The rich and challenging curriculum extends throughout the School and ensures a fun but focused education.
In years 7 to 9 we offer a broad and dynamic curriculum which gives pupils tremendous variety and the opportunity to discover new subjects in dedicated specialist settings, building on their work at Primary School and setting them up for success at GCSE and A Level.
At GCSE level, pupils take 9 subjects including a core of Maths, English and Science. Pupils then choose from a broad range of Languages, Humanities and Creative subjects allowing them to shape their learning experiences and prepare themselves for A Level study.
Support for Learning
We recognise that children have different needs at different times and our teachers collaborate to address these needs and provide for them.
My daughter has been here since she was three, and it’s been like a big family for her. The teachers here have known her for so long, so they really understand her capabilities. She’s been so well supported – if there were ever concerns, they were raised and dealt with properly. And then there’s the sports side too – she’s had a fantastic sports career here at NULS, and the school trips as well. She’s now looking forward to South Africa and New York, which just opens up a world of opportunity.
To continue her journey for another two years gives her the best opportunities. We’re just absolutely thrilled.

The teachers have been really supportive. The lessons – they were always trying to help us with tricky marks schemes. They’ve been so helpful with feedback, even when I went up to them asking, “Oh, can you just mark this?” or “Can you check that?” They’ve been brilliant.
Don’t be shy to ask the teachers questions – it’s their job to help you, so make the most of them while you can. And also, just try to have fun in the year before it gets serious.

We recommend registering your interest in a place at NULS Senior School as soon as possible, as interest in high. Students joining in year 7 need to complete an examination in November of Year 6, and those joining in later years will complete an examination before enrolment. Pupils in Year 7 – 9 regularly join throughout the school year, with many also joining us at the beginning of Year 10 to commence their GCSE study. To arrange tours, attend Open Days, and for a breakdown of fees, scholarships and support available, get in touch with our admissions team.
Students joining us in Year 7 will need to sit an entrance examination in November of Year 6. We recommend registering early for enrolment as interest is always very high. Students joining mid-year or in year 8 onwards will still need to take an exam, which can be arranged during the admissions process.
While the majority of our pupils join us at the start of year 7, pupils are welcome to join in Year 7, 8, 9, or at the start of Year 10.
