Building Futures

Building Futures

Promoting a progressive career provision that is linked to our key values is an essential part of the school ethos. Our effective and impartial careers programme, together with a rich curriculum, places our students’ best interests at the centre of everything we do. We aim to support the aspirations of all our learners and ensure they gain the skills, competencies and experiences they require to progress in their learning and in the world of work.

Our ambitious programme runs from Year 7 to Year 13. The programme contains age appropriate content and delivers a breadth of opportunities and experiences both in PSHE Careers lessons and through extra-curricular activities. It encourages our students to understand the wide range of future pathways available including technical, vocational and academic routes.

Super-Curricular

At NULS, we know the value that Super-Curricular programmes can offer students in allowing them to succeed further in their academic and professional lives. These programmes bring a range of skills and experiences to our students that few schools can offer at such a high level.

Our Senior School pupils have the opportunity to join various societies as part of our NULS Futures Pathways. We know that many of our students are committed to careers in Law and in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Studies and Engineering which is why we have developed our highly successful Pre-Med, Pre-Law and Pre-Engineering societies, allowing pupils to gain skills and develop knowledge in preparation for challenging university applications. With more societies on the horizon, we aim to create a suite of pathways to help our pupils access and achieve success in a wide range of careers.

Work Experience

Work Experience

Newcastle-under-Lyme students have undertaken work experience in Year 10 for many years. Work Experience Week is a perfect opportunity for students to learn about the importance of discipline, routines and relationships in the workplace and to develop new skills. Work experience gives students the chance to learn about what type of job they might enjoy and develop their CV. We know it can be one of the most transformational experiences our young people have during their education.

Students and their families source their own placements where possible, with students taking ownership of the process from the earliest stages. Previous students have carried out placements at an array of fascinating and wide-ranging companies including a Venture Capital firm, Football clubs, a Michelin Star restaurant and more. We are so grateful to the many employers in the area who work with us to provide such beneficial opportunities for our students.

Post-18 Options

Throughout Sixth Form we work with our students to identify their options for life after NULS, provide guidance and help them navigate the processes involved in accessing a variety of routes. As they approach the end of Year 12, our students attend a Higher Education Morning, a UCAS exhibition, as well as a Post-18 Options Information Evening for Parents. All students are provided with ongoing support in navigating the UCAS admissions process.

In addition to the support offered for accessing University, we provide guidance for our pupils looking to pursue different routes including Degree Apprenticeship and Gap Years.

Underpinning all of our careers support for senior students is our Futures Pathways Programme which helps students to learn about and prepare for their chosen vocational area of interest. Areas include Law, Engineering, Creative and Performing Arts, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry, Sport, and Business.
