Welcome to our website. I have never been prouder to lead NULS. We are thriving as Staffordshire’s Leading independent school. Our 2020 inspection rated us as Double Excellent at all levels – there is no higher rating. And, we are pushing on – our vision for 2025 is bold. We are developing our curriculum and co-curricular provision at all levels and seeking to ever improve our facilities. This is a unique private school with an unrivalled offer and I can’t wait for you to discover us for yourself.

Our stated goal is the pursuit of excellence and our school’s rich history of academic achievement places us amongst the highest performing schools in the country. We aim to create an academic culture where students are aspiring and equipped to excel. However, the very best of schools must aim for all-round excellence. Nothing less will suffice, nor should it. At Newcastle-under-Lyme School, we appreciate our pupils gain immense enjoyment and important extension from their wider interests. In this way, our exceptional breadth of opportunity in areas such as Sport, Music and the Creative and Performing Arts also differentiate us, and which only a school of our scale and facilities can provide.

Newcastle-under-Lyme School’s roots are traceable to the early 1600s as a pioneer of education in the region. The spirit and forward looking approach evident then, underpins everything we do now and our ambitions for our school are only matched by our aspirations for our pupils. If you would like to discover more about Newcastle-under-Lyme School then I would certainly encourage you to visit us.

Visitors frequently comment on how welcoming they find our community. We look forward to meeting you.

Our History

Newcastle-under-Lyme School is the leading independent day school in Staffordshire, England.

The School has a long and celebrated history having served the region for over four hundred years. It is the product of an amalgamation between the old Newcastle High School (formed 1874) and the Orme Girls’ School (formed 1876). Today, the School consists of the Nursery, Prep, Senior and Sixth Form. The School is renowned for its high academic achievement and diverse array of co-curricular activities on offer for boys and girls aged 2-18.

The beautiful Victorian school buildings you see now were built in the 1870s. Today the School enjoys an elegant suburban setting on a 30 acre site. The setting is open and attractive with tree lined paths and well-tended gardens. The traditional and modern school buildings blend seamlessly and, like these buildings, the education children receive here fuses the best from the past and present. The School playing fields and pitches are readily accessible and cleverly integrated into the site. The School is easily reached from the surrounding areas including Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire and is close to the centre of Newcastle-under-Lyme.

We are an academic private school with an excellent track record in public examinations. Beyond that academic focus, co-curricular participation is embedded in the lives of all our pupils. We compete at a competitive level in regional and national independent school sports events. We produce a regular programme of performing arts, including drama, music and dance. We debate on the national and international youth circuits and we have a very broad selection of clubs, societies and outdoor pursuits, including our Navy, Army and Air Force CCF contingents and DofE cohorts.

Our Achievements

Our Achievements

Our School was founded 400 years ago as an act of forward looking generosity.

The spirit and forward looking approach evident then underpins everything we do now and our ambitions for our school are only matched by our aspirations for our pupils. We want to be a broad and inclusive school with a thirst for academic excellence.

Our school’s rich history of academic achievement places us amongst the very highest performing schools in the entire country. In 2019, we were ranked in The Times’ elite Top 50 UK Co-educational Independent School league tables but since then we have reached even higher.

In 2020, our GCSE results challenged all historic school records when they climbed to an exceptional 74% Grade 7-9 at GCSE with 37% at Grade 9. We entered the Times Parent Power top 10 West Midlands Independent Day Schools and were the third highest performing co-ed day school in the entire West Midland region in 2022. Our pupils’ achievements at A Level not only led in the County once again in 2022, but also broke school historic public examination records, with 83% A*-B at Advanced Level and 61% A*-A, as we continued our incredible track record of sending students to Oxbridge, Russell Group and leading universities and colleges across the UK, Europe and the US.

Our Mission and Our Aims

From its establishment in 1602, Newcastle Under Lyme School has acquired a reputation as one of the leading schools in the North of England. Today, our school’s aims reflect our immense history, and the traditions and values that have been evident throughout this time.

NULS aims to provide an excellent education to children in our region, embracing our community’s diversity and facilitating access to children from a wide range of economic backgrounds.

More specifically, we seek to:

Provide an excellent education to enable our pupils to explore their own individual academic potential;

Create a vibrant and rich extracurricular environment, so our pupils are challenged and motivated with new opportunities so they may explore their own unique range of broader talents and interests;

Develop in our pupils, the skills and qualities they require to successfully advance with their academic and professional careers beyond NULS;

Foster in our pupils, the values and sense of purpose that will enable them to be positive and successful contributors to their communities and broader society;

Provide an outstanding campus, facilities and resources, to enable our pupils and staff to have the opportunities to enjoy and provide a first class, holistic education.

Our Mission and Our Aims

Our Values

Our Values

Embodying our aims, our four key values we hope to develop in our pupils as they advance through School.

Aspiration – we want to encourage in our pupils an aspirational attitude in the broadest sense, where they are encouraged to explore their potential in academic and all-round terms.

Endeavour – we wish to encourage in our pupils a sense of commitment and an appreciation that qualities such as resilience and determination are significant and rewarding assets both individually and collectively.

Respect – we want our pupils to view themselves as a community, where respect for one another, and an appreciation of the wonderful diversity in our community, is embedded within our school. We also want our pupils to respect those beyond our school, in our local community and the broader global environment.

Kindness – we hope to encourage in our pupils an underpinning sense of kindness to one another and to all of those in our community, and to those beyond. We feel this quality is key to creating a happy school, where pupils feel they can thrive, individually and together.
