Newcastle-under-Lyme School’s talented U14 Girls Hockey Team have made school history by becoming the first girls’ team to make it through to the National Finals of the England Hockey U14 Tier 2 Championships.
In their journey to Nationals, the girls won their county rounds and were then crowned Midlands Champions after taking on teams from across the region. The final, which took place on 5th February at Nottingham’ National Hockey Centre, saw the girls compete against the top 8 U14 Schools in the entire Country, finishing 6th.
In the lead up to the final, the squad were devoted to developing their game further through regular training sessions and fixtures both inside and outside of school time.
Speaking of their success, Girls’ Hockey Coach at Newcastle-under-Lyme School, Charlotte Lytollis said: “This is a really fantastic squad and their commitment to training and matches is second to none. Their enthusiasm for the sport is just unbelievable and their friendship both on and off the pitch really brings them together as a team. It is amazing that so many of the girls are playing both school hockey and club hockey which really develops their skills and tactics.”
Captain of the team, Maddy, added: “It means so much to myself and the team to have made it to Nationals as we are the first girls squad from this School to have made it so far in the competition. It also means so much that I have been able to captain them this far”
Newcastle under Lyme School’s youngest pupils have raised over £5000 for Cancer Research UK by completing a sponsored walk ‘from’ Newcastle-under-Lyme to Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia.
