As part of the NULS Futures Programme, we were proud to welcome back Squadron Leader Ben Brown, RAF Officer Training Academy instructor and NULS alumnus (Class of 2004). Ben spent the day meeting students across the school, offering an honest and motivating insight into life in the Armed Forces and the skills needed to thrive in a military career.
Ben began the day with a dedicated session for our Year 11 and Year 12 Forces Pathway students, who are exploring potential careers within the military. Drawing on his personal journey from NULS pupil to senior RAF officer, he spoke candidly about the realities of life in the services – from officer training and leadership development to the discipline, adaptability and teamwork required at every stage.
He provided invaluable behind-the-scenes perspectives on the structure and demands of RAF life, highlighting what applicants can expect and what will help them stand out. Ben encouraged students to build strong communication skills, embrace responsibility, and develop resilience – qualities that he believes are essential for anyone aspiring to serve.
For students considering following in his footsteps, his guidance on preparation, mindset and the application process was both practical and inspiring.
Later in the day, Ben delivered a dynamic talk for our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils, introducing them to the role of an RAF Officer in an engaging and accessible way. He emphasised how the skills they are already developing — teamwork in sports, communication with friends, problem-solving in class — are the very foundations of leadership.
Ben explained how these early experiences shaped his own growth and helped him succeed through the challenges of RAF training and career progression.
Ben’s visit was a powerful reminder of the impact Castilians continue to have beyond their time at school, and how their journeys can motivate the pupils who follow them. His openness, enthusiasm and willingness to give back to the school community made the day meaningful for students of all ages.
We extend our thanks to Squadron Leader Ben Brown for sharing his experiences and offering our students such valuable encouragement and guidance. His visit has undoubtedly inspired many to think ambitiously about their futures — whether in the Armed Forces or beyond.
