Pre-Med Society

We place a huge value on the preparation we give our pupils for their future careers and we know that many of our students are committed to careers in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Studies. So, we have created a specialist Pre-Med Society which supports these pupils through from Year 10 to the point of their application and during interview and examination preparation.

We have a long history of sending Medics, Dentists and Vets to university and with a comprehensive programme of UCAT and BMAT preparations, interview preparations, and ongoing lectures by visiting professionals and a mentoring programme for pupils during their time in school.

The society is led by a member of our Science department and specialist support is provided through our Head of Careers, External experts and our Head of Sixth Form who co-ordinates applications in these fields.

Listed below is a taste of what pupils can experience at The Pre-Med Society as they progress through school:

Year 10 and Year 11

Regular meetings and lectures to inspire and inform on all areas of Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary and broader Health Care and related professions.
Mentoring – Academic mentoring and also next steps work experience and voluntary work guidance from Yr 12 and 13.
Mini Ethics – A first look at ethics and what the principle of ethics actually is, showing that healthcare practitioners will be required to use thought processes beyond the scientific.
Mini UCAT – A first taste of the university entrance tests to come in Yr 12

Year 10 and Year 11

Year 12

Leadership opportunities which are:
- Chance to be a mentor to Yr 10/11.
- Organise and deliver Pre-Med Junior – engaging health-related lessons given to pupils in junior school.
- Organise and deliver ‘Mini ethics’ to Yr 10 and 11.

UCAT and BMAT formal training – delivered regularly in-house and through an external training provider.
Medical ethics discussions – Provides a forum for discussion of real ethical scenarios within healthcare.
Continuation of regular meetings and lectures to inspire and inform on all areas of Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary and broader Health Care and related professions.
University course guidance and course selection assistance.

Personalised help with personal statement writing.
Bespoke assistance with applications to ensure students maximise their chances of success.
Interview preparation and practice to support students as they approach university interviews.
Further leadership opportunities, which are:
- Chance to be a mentor to all years below.
- Lead the ethics discussions.
- Lead the Pre-Med Society – Become ambassadors in the roles of Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary.
