We are excited to launch a unique and innovative outdoors adventures programme for our Prep Schoolwhich is dedicated to stimulating ambition and instilling self-belief in our pupils.
Prep Adventures is a bespoke in-house programme of outdoor pursuits, led by NULS’ resident industry experts, and is a journey of discovery across the Prep school from Little NULS Nursery to Year 6, where pupils will take on activities and challenges across the three key elements of the programme; land, water and air.
Utilising the incredible expertise and resourcing available at NULS, the programme will enable our Prep pupils to take part in activities such as archery, orienteering, hiking, canoeing, open water swimming, zip lining and much more, providing them with the perfect foundation with which to pursue programmes such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and CCF at later stages in their education.
Research now backs up what forest school practitioners have known all along – that children and young people are stimulated by the outdoors and typically experience, over time, an increase in their self-belief, confidence, learning capacity, enthusiasm, communication and problem-solving skills.
Prep Adventures has been carefully mapped to provide compulsory and optional challenges, which are integrated within the Prep School curriculum and the co-curricular offer. As children progress through the year groups the activities they encounter will build upon their skill set, take them out of their comfort zone and reward them for their growth.
Each year the programme will culminate in a celebration of achievement where pupils will be recognised for the practical skills they have developed, their personal growth and their positive contributions to charity and global environmental concerns.
Since taking over as Head of the Prep School earlier this year, Mrs Thomson has embraced our pupils’ love of being outside and has built on the amazing heritage of co-curricular provision within the school, to bring a programme that fully integrates outdoor learning within the curriculum, allowing pupils to develop and thrive.
Mrs Kathryn Thomson, Head of Newcastle-under-Lyme Preparatory School, said: “We are thrilled to be able to draw on the expertise of professionals who work with children in our Senior School, to be able to design and deploy a programme specifically for our Prep pupils at such a key time in their development.
“After such a long time indoors during the pandemic, the importance to children of being outdoors and with their peers is really apparent. Getting outside the classroom sets learning in a different context for children and the benefits are endless; from improved physical health and emotional well-being to building confidence and resilience and so much more.”
