Curriculum

At Newcastle-under-Lyme Junior School, we pride ourselves on our high academic standards.  We also know that children learn best when they are enjoying themselves.  That is why our lessons are fun and challenging, following but not bound by the National Curriculum and enhanced by the expertise and enthusiasm of our dedicated team of staff.

With a broad range of subjects, small class sizes and individual attention your child will prosper in a setting designed to give them the best possible start in life. Furthermore, with specialist teaching in music and Modern Foreign Languages, an IT suite and extensive facilities, children have every opportunity to progress.

With smaller class sizes and individual extension or support where necessary, children develop the confidence to tackle tasks and problems with resilience, humour and tenacity.  Regular formal and informal assessment informs teachers’ planning and enables us to challenge each child at the appropriate level, making the most of every child’s potential.

The Pre-Preparatory Department

The Pre-Preparatory Department

Overview
During the Pre-Prep are nurtured in all aspects of their education and development. Enthusiastic and well-qualified staff provide the perfect environment for our children to grow in confidence and to learn effectively.

Curriculum
We place an emphasis upon literacy and numeracy whilst seeking to broaden educational horizons through the study of art, design, technology, the humanities and languages from an early age. All requirements of the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 are met and we go the distance to ensure that we  go beyond these requirements and add valuable extra requirements of our own. We follow such aims through the provision of many clubs, societies and other co-curricular activities which may be age specific or shared with children in other year groups.

We believe that small class sizes at this level benefit our children, thus allowing individual attention to be given according to need while offering the opportunity for detailed assessment of each child’s development to be pursued. Each year group is divided into two mixed forms of 20 children. We aim to help our children develop into individuals who have the confidence, self-reliance and abilities to achieve success in all that they do and according to their talents.

The Preparatory Department

The Preparatory Department

Overview
Our Preparatory Department offers a  broad, challenging and varied curriculum which seeks to build on the foundations laid during the Pre-Prep years and to ensure continuity in your child's educational journey. With greater maturity our curriculum and range of activities adapt to meet each child’s needs at his or her pace with emphasis placed on English, Mathematics, Science and ICT as core subjects which are enhanced by a rich timetable of academic subjects.

Curriculum
We cover all requirements of the national curriculum at Key Stage 2 but are in no way constrained by its provisions. We lay great emphasis upon the need to provide a breadth of study to all children.

Each year group within the Department comprises two mixed forms of up to 24 children. Each form spends most of each day with their class teacher who provides a thorough grounding in English, Mathematics and Science. A wider range of subjects is also pursued each week and includes History, Geography, Religious Studies, Art, Technology, Music, ICT and Personal, Social and
Health Education. Furthermore children in Prep 6 pursue a course in Classical Studies while children in Prep 3, 4 and 5 learn French, Spanish and German in rotation.

We encourage strong links with the Senior School and our children benefit not only from the excellent facilities available here but also from specialist teaching in sport, languages and ICT.
