For decades, Newcastle-under-Lyme School has cultivated a reputation for dramatic excellence, providing a sophisticated stage for the remarkable talents of our pupils. Our theatrical calendar is defined by three distinct highlights, offering a continuous spotlight for performers of all ages.
The season commences in the Autumn with the Upper School Play, where Year 10–13 students tackle mature, demanding repertoire that consistently rivals professional standards. As the year turns to Spring, the “must-see” Whole School Musical unites the Senior School and Sixth Form in a dazzling display of talent and joy, with performances so seamless that audiences often forget they are watching a school production. Finally, the Summer Term celebrates our younger stars in Years 7–9, who have recently brought classics like Treasure Island and Animal Farm to life.
In the Autumn Term, pupils bought to life Noël Coward’s classic comic play Blithe Spirit with great skill, charm and wit.
Taking on such legendary roles is no small feat, but our talented cast rose to the occasion, diving headfirst into the sophisticated dialogue and supernatural chaos.
Behind every great performance is an equally great crew; a huge thank you to the pupils and staff whose tireless work in lighting, sound, staging, and wardrobe ensured the production was nothing short of spellbinding.
With a cast of 60 pupils from Year 7 to 13, Anything Goes set sail from the Memorial Hall in February. Set aboard a luxury ocean liner, the S.S. American, on its journey from New York to England, the classic musical comedy had audiences toes tapping to Cole Porter’s witty songs.
The production served as a masterful collaboration between NULS’ drama, music, and dance departments, uniting the dedication of our pupils to deliver a true theatrical treat.
Accompanied by a soaring orchestra led by our fantastic music department and over 25 staff and pupils backstage to ensure smooth sailing, it was a truly ‘de-lovely’ week.
Coming soon to NULS, lower school pupils will stage a heart-warmingly funny rendition of My Family and Other Animals.
Searching for a sun-drenched escape, the eccentric Durrell family swaps rainy England for the vibrant Greek island of Corfu. Young Gerald quickly turns their villa into a literal zoo, filling his pockets and their home with an array of wild local creatures. The result is a chaotic and heart-warming comedy that proves family is the wildest animal of all.
