As part of the NULS Futures Forum programme we were delighted to welcome Caterina Termine (Class of 1999). As the Senior Veterinary Advisor at the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI), Caterina plays a pivotal role in the safety and integrity of international competition including at the Rio, Tokyo, and Paris Olympic Games. Throughout the day, Caterina delivered a series of engaging and inspiring sessions that gave students a deeper understanding of veterinary medicine, scientific practice and the skills needed for future success.
Caterina began her day with a morning session dedicated to myth busting about careers in the veterinary world. Students quickly learned that the profession is far broader than the stereotypes suggest. From public health and pathology to scientific writing, pharmaceuticals, regulation and telemedicine, Caterina highlighted the huge diversity of roles available.
She also explored the skills and qualities that underpin a successful veterinary career – resilience, empathy, calmness under pressure and strong teamwork – while offering realistic insight into the challenges, including long hours, emotional cases and the importance of looking after your mental wellbeing.
Caterina then joined a biology lesson, where she brought the curriculum to life by exploring how vaccine research works in the real world. Using her background in equine clinical research, she guided students through the full process of vaccine development, from early laboratory stages to clinical trials with ponies.
Students gained a behind-the-scenes understanding of how scientists ensure vaccines are safe and effective, the need for unbiased study design, and the strict welfare regulations that protect animals involved in research. This session demonstrated how the science they learn in the classroom translates directly into life-saving real-world applications.
In the afternoon, Caterina returned for her dedicated Futures Forum talk, where she focused on communication, ethics and preparing for university applications. She explored the crucial role communication plays in all healthcare professions — from verbal and non-verbal skills to listening, emotional intelligence and professionalism.
Students discussed real ethical scenarios, learning about decision-making, confidentiality, and the responsibilities expected of veterinary and healthcare professionals. Caterina also gave practical, grounded advice for university interviews, encouraging students to answer questions clearly and honestly, avoid over-rehearsed responses and reflect confidently on their own experiences.
Caterina’s visit offered NULS students an authentic insight into the veterinary field, combining scientific depth with personal experience and practical guidance. Her honesty, expertise and enthusiasm made a strong impact across all year groups, from budding vets to students simply interested in the science behind vaccines.
We are grateful to Caterina Termine for giving her time so generously and for helping our students take meaningful steps toward their future careers.
