Sixth Form Admissions
We are delighted to welcome enquiries about our outstanding Sixth Form in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Each year we welcome students from a range of local schools and guide them through how to apply for Sixth Form and begin their exciting journey with us.
Entry into Sixth Form is a transformative time for many students and a vital time to focus on further education at university, through Degree Apprenticeships or entering the world of work. Newcastle-under-Lyme School Sixth Form offers a special opportunity to study in a school-based environment which is Sixth Form focused.
Academic progression during the Sixth Form is key and we are always excited by the challenge of helping our Sixth Formers to achieve their full potential. We offer exciting Sixth Form-only subjects such as Psychology, Philosophy, Politics, Economics and Business Studies along with a broad curriculum tailored to our students’ needs.
How to Apply for Sixth Form
Students wishing to apply to our Newcastle-under-Lyme Sixth Form are required to complete our Registration Form and Sixth Form Application Form. Students will also be required to attend an Interview and provide a School Report. All offers that are made are conditional on the student achieving the required GCSE results.
We also run our Scholarship process in the Autumn Term of Year 11, with Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sports Scholarships available. We encourage pupils to apply as early as possible during Year 11 to benefit from the full range of events on offer throughout the year.
Entry Requirements
For entry into the Sixth Form, our expectation is that students will have gained at least eight GCSEs at grade 5 (C) or above, including at least two at grade 7 (A) and three at grade 6 (B) or above. Students should have Mathematics and English Language within their eight GCSEs. In general, we also expect that subjects to be studied at Sixth Form level should (where applicable) have been achieved with at least a grade 7 at GCSE.
A range of prestigious Scholarships and Exhibition Awards are available to internal and external entrants to our Newcastle-under-Lyme Sixth Form. The principal awards for Sixth Form entry are: Academic, Sport, Music, Art & Drama.
Further details about the application process are available from the Registrar and we welcome anyone who wishes to apply for our Sixth Form to get in touch.

The number of routes has increased with demand, collecting pupils from as close as is practical to their home address. Please enquire if you do not see your area covered.
Sixth Form Life
We give our pupils the tools they need to succeed – no matter their hobbies or interests. As a leading Sixth Form in Staffordshire, we believe that a well-rounded education doesn’t begin and end in the classroom.
In addition to our curricular offer, we are proud to have launched NULS Futures, a number of pathways which provide students with detailed support and guidance, designed to help pupils access their chosen career paths. With pathways including everything from our renowned Pre-Med Society to our Elite Athlete Programme, we are committed to offering opportunities across a diverse range of disciplines.
The co-curricular programme for our Sixth Form students is varied and expertly led by our staff. We appreciate the value of enriching the Sixth Form curriculum through participation in Sports, Drama and Music as well as CCF, DofE, Model UN and more. Additionally, students have the opportunity to participate in educational visits, an international study trip and sports tours.
Inspection Reports
In April 2024, NULS’ Nursery, Prep School, Senior School and Sixth Form received our latest Routine Inspection from ISI. Under their new, very rigorous framework, the inspectors gave a glowing and highly praising report of the school and went further bestowing on the school the accolade of a ‘significant strength’, due to the quality, impact and extent of the School’s co-curricular provision. This is a very rare honour for a school to receive. For a school that is so renowned for its academic strengths, this was a wonderful further accolade to receive and hopefully demonstrates how we succeed in our goal to provide an outstanding and rounded education.
The exceptional outcome of this latest inspection builds wonderfully on that of our school’s last inspection in March 2020, when NULS’ Nursery, Prep School, Senior School and Sixth Form were awarded the very highest gradings possible by ISI, securing a clean sweep of ‘Excellent’ grades in both Achievement and Personal Development; a brilliant testimony to the ability of our academic staff and support teams, and the hugely impressive achievements and personal qualities of our pupils.
