The Board of Governors are delighted to announce that they have appointed Mr Michael Getty to the post of Headmaster of Newcastle-under-Lyme School, starting in September 2018.
Nick Vernon will continue to lead the Senior Management Team liaising, as appropriate, with Michael towards the handover in September.
Michael will join us from his current role as Headmaster of Shrewsbury High School which he has held for five years. During this time, he has led the School to a wide range of prominent academic and all-round successes, with the School acquiring a national profile for its innovative development and progression. He is proud that his tenure has seen a host of national awards and nominations for the School, in a diverse range of areas, from the strategic development of its education through to the outstanding quality of its Sixth Form provision. In addition, Shrewsbury High School was named Best UK School for Sport in 2015.
An Economics graduate, Michael’s first appointment was at Durham High School as Head of Economics and Business in 1994. After an international appointment where he led the Economics Faculty and Sixth Form for Repton in Jordan between 1997 and 1999, Michael returned to Durham as Head of Sixth Form and Development Director. Following that he became Assistant Head at Sheffield High School where he oversaw the development of the School’s Sixth Form and held a portfolio of Academic responsibilities. In 2009 he was appointed Deputy Head at Hill House School in South Yorkshire, where his contributions helped the School to receive the prestigious accolade of Independent School of the Year in 2012.
The Governors and Senior Management Team are looking forward to working with Michael over the coming months and to his arrival in September. Together we have a strong vision for the future of our School with a strong focus on teaching and learning, building on our history and traditions and further developing Newcastle-under-Lyme School as a pioneering school, leading in education.
Michael has commented on how welcoming he found our community, both staff and students, and how the School’s further potential presented an irresistible opportunity that he is very much looking forward to.
