Parents, pupils and staff joined us for our annual Prize Giving ceremony on Thursday 28 June at the Victoria Hall in Hanley. Guest speaker and alumna Dr Lynne Summers inspired pupils to reflect on their capabilities quoting Shakespeare, amongst others, “It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.”

Dr Summers left students and parents enthralled and in awe as she recalled her 2012 expedition to the South Pole, "Footsteps of Legends expedition." The expedition marked the 100th anniversary of Captain's Scott epic expedition in 1912. The team raised an incredible £1 million for their two nominated charities, Walking with the Wounded and Alzheimers Research UK. Lynne is no stranger to adventure, having trekked across Baffin Island in winter, climbed Aconcagua Mountain in Argentina and even skied on glaciers at Spitzbergen.

At the heart of these expeditions is a social and moral cause, with the Baffin Island expedition it was a journey of environmental discovery as Lynne learned about the plight of the native Inuit community as a consequence of climate change and pollution of the Arctic Ocean.

Once again it proved to be a memorable evening for all, celebrating the rich and varied academic and co-curricular successes of our students.
